Study Reveals Artificial Sweeteners May Promote Obesity and Raise Blood Sugar
Forbes reports that a recent study published in Nature found that artificial sweeteners appear to lead to higher blood sugar. In particular, the researchers studied mice and found that the chemicals seem to interfere with the friendly bacteria in our gut. In addition, the researchers also studied human participants who regularly consume artificial sweeteners and found that these participants had different gut bacteria in comparison to participants who did not consume artificial sweeteners.
One of the study authors, Eran Elinav of the Weizmann Institute, stated: “Our relationship with our own individual mix of gut bacteria is a huge factor in determining how the food we eat affects us. Especially intriguing is the link between use of artificial sweeteners – through the bacteria in our guts – to a tendency to develop the very disorders they were designed to prevent; this calls for reassessment of today’s massive, unsupervised consumption of these substances.”
