FDA Reports Bee Pollen Weight Loss Products Threaten Health
According to U.S. Health News, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that alleged weight loss products containing bee pollen may pose health risks to consumers, including high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and bipolar disorder.
These weight loss products have been found to contain undeclared and potentially dangerous ingredients. In one instance, FDA investigators found that the weight loss product ‘La Jiao Shou Shen’ contained phenolphthalein, a non-active ingredient posing a potential cancer-causing risk, and sibutramine, an active ingredient known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate. Studies suggest that the active ingredient may also pose a serious threat to patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Sibutramine is a controlled substance that was removed from the market in October 2010 for safety reasons.
The two dangerous ingredients have also been found in other bee pollen weight loss products, including Ultimate Formula, Fat Zero, Bella Vi Amp’d Up, Insane Amp’d Up, Slim Trim U, Infinity, Perfect Body Solution, Asset Extreme, Asset Extreme Plus, Asset Bold, Asset Bee Pollen, and Zi Xiu Tang. The FDA is evaluating and testing other bee pollen weight loss products that could contain undeclared drugs.
FDA’s national health fraud coordinator, Gary Coody, stated that “when people buy these tainted bee pollen weight loss products, they are unknowingly taking one or more hidden drugs that have been banned from the market.” Another FDA regulator, Jason Humbert, added, “[T]he fact that these products contain a hidden dangerous ingredient, consumers should avoid taking them.”
