What is Ethex?

Ethex is a brand of morphine sulfate extended release tablets available in either 30mg or 60mg dosages manufactured by Ethex Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri.  Morphine sulfate is a Schedule II narcotic and is used to relieve moderate to severe pain in individuals who require moderate to long term pain management treatments. Morphine sulfate is an extended release tablet and is usually taken twice per day unlike regular morphine pills that are taken every four hours.

Morphine is one of the oldest known drugs in the modern world. Discovered in 1804, its pain reliving properties have been known for over two centuries. Highly addictive, morphine use and distribution is carefully guarded and monitored by both physicians and the federal government.

Morphine was first prohibited in the United States by the 1915 Harrison Narcotics Act.  Later, the Food and Drug Administration acquired control over medicinal uses of morphine.  Currently, morphine is prescribed to patients in moderate to severe pain. Extended release morphine sulfate tablets, like Ethex, are prescribed only when the pain is severe enough that normal morphine, with a four-hour window, is insufficient.

Ethex Lawsuits

Ethex morphine sulfate tablets, manufactured by Ethex Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri, are used to help manage chronic moderate to severe pain. While morphine sulfate is best known for its pain management qualities, it is highly praised for its 12-hour time release properties.

Ethex 30mg and 60mg morphine sulfate extended release tablets purchased between June 2006–May 2008 were recalled by Ethex Corporation on June 16, 2008.  Since the Ethex recall just began, it is unclear the number and scope of the injuries it caused.
