What is Enbrel?
Enbrel is a protein called a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker that blocks the action of a substance your body’s immune system makes called TNF. People with too much TNF in their bodies may develop an immune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, or psoriasis. Enbrel can reduce the amount of active TNF in the body to normal levels, helping to treat your disease. In reducing the amount of active TNF, Enbrel also lowers the body’s ability to fight infections.
Enbrel is used as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection only. Injections can be given in the front of the middle of the thigh, abdomen (except around the navel), or the back outer area of the upper arm.
Health Effects from Enbrel Use
Enbrel has been linked to serious infections, nervous system disorders and, in rare cases, serious blood problems. Initial complications from the use of Enbrel include
- persistent fever
- extreme or unusual fatigue
- unexplained or prolonged bruising or bleeding
- black, bloody or tarry stools
- fever or chills
- signs of infection such as sore throat or pale skin
