ABC Detroit Reports: “Pradaxa is the Most Complained about Drug in the United States”
ABC Detroit reports that Pradaxa is the most complained about drug in the United States. Since its approval by the FDA in 2010, Pradaxa has been associated with 1,158 deaths and 12,494 serious injuries in the United States, according to Tom Moore , senior scientist for drug safety and policy at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP). Moore said, “We’ve found that this drug had a potential benefit in preventing stroke, but it also had extremely high risk of bleeding as do some other anti-coagulants.”
Pradaxa® is an oral anticoagulant (blood thinner) launched by Boehringer Ingelheim in October 2010. According to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, over 2,000 federal Pradaxa® lawsuits are currently pending against the drug’s manufacturers in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois before the Honorable Chief Judge David R. Herndon, and the number of cases is expected to continue to grow. These individuals allege that they have suffered severe – and often fatal – injuries while using Pradaxa® and that Boehringer Ingelheim failed to adequately warn about bleeding risks and the lack of a reversal agent.
The first trial in the Pradaxa® Multidistrict Litigation entitled In re: Pradaxa® (Dabigatran Etexilate) Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2385, Case No. 12-md-2385) is set to begin on September 15, 2014 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
